In the June issue of Sauce, we highlighted eight great places to drink outside this summer. It’s time to add one more to the list, now that the Biergarten at Urban Chestnut Brewing Co., has opened. In April, co-owners David Wolfe and Florian Kuplent announced their plans to build a 400-seat Bavarian Biergarten in the area adjacent to the Midtown Alley brewery. Beer pavilion built, custom-made German tables arrived and lights strung, St. Louis’ newest outdoor drinking hot spot opened last Thursday.
Both beer and food are available at the Biergarten pavilion (pictured). Four brews are on tap; three will be dedicated to UCBC’s popular Winged Nut, Zwickle and Schnickelfritz, while the fourth will rotate. The menu at the pavilion includes a few meat items – a Nuremburg Weiner, a brat and Landjaeger (dry-cured venison sausage) – as well as a cheese platter, a giant grilled pretzel and locally made Billy Goat chips.
Wolfe noted that more improvements to the space are forthcoming. Expected to arrive any day are umbrellas colored red and blue to coordinate with Urban Chestnut’s “Reverence” (traditional European) and “Revolution” (modern American) approaches to brewing. New bathrooms located behind the pavilion are also planned, as is a guest parking lot with a back entrance to the brewery.
The pavilion service windows at the Biergarten are open Thursday through Saturday from 6 p.m. to close, though guests can sit outside at the Biergarten any time the tasting room is open. Wolfe and Kuplent hope to eventually add Sunday afternoon hours and possibly other evening hours. The Biergarten is expected to be open March through October, but the pair is considering adding heaters to the area to extend the patio season.
