The Saint Louis Chamber Chorus: A Swedish Christmas

December 19, midnight

Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church 636-458-4343

Celebrations of Christmas in Sweden are unusually rich, from the native traditions to favorite imported carols such as the Neapolitan bagpipers’ “Sankta Lucia.” The Chorus’s Composer-in-Residence, Mårten Jansson, has created not one but two suites of Christmas favorites from his homeland, including goblins, goats and good old Santa Claus. These collections are scored specifically for unaccompanied voices, the characteristic feature of the Chamber Chorus, but they contrast in a lively fashion with Janssen’s Missa Popularis which he wrote for mixed voices and a string ensemble. Joining the choir will be the Perseid String Quartet, comprising some of St. Louis’s top female string players. They complement a charming carol by Valborg Aulin (1860 – 1928), a pioneering female composer who became one of Sweden’s leading pianists.
