The Saint Louis Chamber Chorus: Despair to Hope

April 16, midnight

Immanuel Lutheran Church 6364584343

Journey from Despair to Hope
Join the Chamber Chorus Sunday, April 16 at 3 pm as we perform the fifth concert of our 67th season at Immanuel Lutheran Church, a beautifully restored landmark in downtown St. Charles. In Despair to Hope, the Chorus will explore music of both pathos and triumph. The pain and resignation of Mary at the foot of the Cross is memorably captured in the Stabat Mater of the late Stephen Paulus, while the essence of sacrifice lies at the heart of motets by Anton Bruckner and Knut Nystedt. In contrast, the Chorus will express the joy of the Resurrection in Easter Bells, a brand-new work written for the choir by Ukrainian-born composer Yakov Gubanov who will fly here to attend the premiere. Secular works will complement these religious themes including the queen’s lament, which concludes Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas, and an exuberant part-song by Greville Cook appropriate for this time of year as it begins Oh! To be in England now that April’s there!
