Ninth Street Deli moves to former Howard’s space in Soulard

Soulard’s Ninth Street Deli opened in the former Howard’s location at 2732 S. 13th St., yesterday, June 18, under a new moniker. For the previous 10 years, co-owners John and Angie Been’s newly named Ninth Street Deli at Howard’s occupied the space at 900 Shenandoah Ave.

“This move was about getting bigger. Our customer base deserves bigger and better,” John Been said. “Instead of putting money into my own pocket, I’m putting it into this building, for our customers.”

After closing their restaurant in August 2017, the Howard family approached Been about the move. Enticed by visions of the patio at Mardi Gras, the indoor stage and renovations to the 130-year-old building, Been’s decision was an easy one.

“We wanted to blend our business plan with Howard’s,” Been said. “They had the stage and were big into live music and we have our own thing. It’s the mega plan.”

The lunch menu will remain the same, but expect a burger bistro atmosphere at dinner. With the move, Been is able to take on the sale of alcohol, while also instituting antipasti and other fresh appetizers as he seeks to stay away from fried foods.

Ninth Street Deli at Howard’s will be open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday through Tuesday.
